WHAT IS A ‘SIN‘?
In simple words, sins comprises of all those acts which we commit against the laws of God, or say, Sin is breaking God’s law. There are lot of acts which Bible counts as a ‘sin’, though we ignore many of them which we commit in our daily life. Among these sins, many of us don’t consider these as sins and commit unknowingly either in ignorance or in absence of our senses. Out of them, I am mentioning 10 of those sins which we should try to abstain and avoid.
1. Holding Grudges
In today’s world, we often face misunderstandings with people around us, usually with people who are close to us. Every human being makes mistakes but they also deserves a second chance too. But we use to keep grudges because of our ego. It counts to non-forgiveness and Bible considers this as a sin.
What Bible says?: “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.”- Leviticus 19:18
2. Women Gossiping in the Church
It’s next to unethical when women talk and gossip in the church instead of attending the prayers. In general gossiping is a bad habit, so when it comes to church, it becomes a sin.
What Bible says?: “Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor; I am the LORD.” –Leviticus 19:16
What is Gluttony?
Gluttony is stuffing ourselves with food more than what body requires.
It’s a bad habit in the moral context too when we stuff ourselves with food or waste food when it’s not required. Bible condemns this and counts as a sin.
What Bible says?: “…And put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.” -Proverbs 23:2
4. Putting Your Desires First (before God)
Human desires are unlimited and unconditional but one should ask anything to God only at the cost of what God wants for us. We usually pray to God for our desires, disregarding whether it will be pleasing to God or not. There are some people who keeps fasts also to fulfill their desires. We should put our wishes to Him and rest leave on Him to decide whether we deserve it or not and the end, should accept whatever he has chosen for us. He gives us only what we deserve, not everything what we desire.
What Bible says?: “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” -Romans 13:14
5. Feeling Annoyed Over The Success Of Others
Bible combined all the commandments from the old testament and formed into one single commandment: “Love your neighbors as you love yourself.” But this commandment seems to get failed by us when we encounter success of our fellow people. There is a time for everything and if your friend or neighbors or any other person reaches to the cradle of success you are not suppose to get annoyed or angry. You have no idea what all they have went thorough to achieve that success point. It’s not visible to everyone but what we see is the results they get out of their hardships of their life. We should trust God for every single wish you’ve asked Him, as when the time comes, you’ll too reach the success step what you’re deserving.
What Bible says?: “Those who practice jealousy will not inherit the kingdom of God.” -Galatians 5:20-21
6. Getting Tattooed
Marking permanently our body with anything is wrong & Bible condemns it.
What Bible says?: “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” -Leviticus 19:28
7. Wives Helping out their Husbands in a Fight
Wives should play as a peacemaker in a home or in outside. A wife should never support or help her husband in any of the fights or arguments with anyone. If the husband has lost his temper, she should calm him down and should try to make things better.
What Bible says?: “When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets.” -Deuteronomy 25:11–12
8. Criticizing and Finding Fault (Secretly or Outwardly)
No one is perfect and it’s neither required to prove it too. If you’re criticizing a person, you’re insulting God’s unique creation.
What Bible says?: “Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy.” -James 4:11
9. Focusing on the Cares of the World
We often get stuck with the worldly things of the world, neglecting the true meaning of life. A little of it is acceptable until you won’s get addicted to it or it affects you directly or indirectly.
What Bible says?: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” -1 John 2:15-17
10. Speaking Unkindly of Those Not Present
Backbiting is bad and Bible counts it as a sin whenever you say a bad word about someone when they aren’t present. If you don’t like anything about someone, be brave to let them convey personally.
What Bible says?: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” -Ephesians 4:29
No one is perfect and we can’t be sure of following all the above things in our life; but awareness is good. So, we can keep them in mind whenever we tend to do next time, so as to avoid it as much as possible.
